The influence of different grades of stainless steel wire on the quality of stainless steel woven mesh

Jul. 22, 2025

Recently, a European metal woven mesh company with a century-old history visited our mesh factory. During the visit, the customer asked a question: Why do you have to classify wires into different grades? Why must the stainless steel raw materials of Tsingshan Group be the best? Faced with this question from the customer, I was obviously stunned. In the stainless steel industry, or in the field of metal woven mesh, almost everyone knows Tsingshan Stainless Steel, and believes that the stainless steel wire rod produced by Tsingshan is one of the best raw materials. This is almost beyond doubt. Do I need to explain it? Because they are large steel mills with advanced equipment and mature technology.

After the customer left, I kept reflecting on this issue. I still have no doubt that Tsingshan's stainless steel wire rod is one of the products with the highest quality standards in the Chinese market. But I gradually understand that as a production-oriented enterprise, the choice of raw materials of which company should not be limited to its brand awareness, but should have its own inspection and assessment system, that is, to use the product's test data to directly reflect the quality standards. Only those who really make this product will understand its quality, and only the factory that really weaves the metal mesh will understand how the quality of the stainless steel mesh comes from.

The distinction between stainless steel wires, from chemical composition to physical properties, the content of each metal element Cr and Ni meets the standard, but we also need to assess whether the non-metallic elements S, C, Mn, etc. are also controlled within the standard range? What about other impurity contents? Can the physical properties be guaranteed? In fact, whether it is stainless steel wire rod, stainless steel wire, or stainless steel woven mesh, whether the processing technology is perfect will directly reflect on the product. For example,

The surface color of the stainless steel mesh square hole mesh is uneven, and the reason for this is related to the raw materials. Although the Cr and Ni content of stainless steel wires meet the standards, the instability of physical properties, the uneven tensile strength and elongation of stainless steel wires, lead to insufficient roundness of stainless steel wires, resulting in soft and hard wires, uneven color or mesh disease after weaving into a mesh, these uneven and unstable conditions will inevitably lead to poor life of the woven mesh.

Okay, let’s move on to the topic of this article, which is how the quality of stainless steel square mesh varies.

First, as we mentioned above, due to the problem of unstable physical properties of raw materials, the color of the mesh surface is uneven, and the life of the woven mesh is damaged. Generally, the square hole dense mesh of 100 mesh and above is particularly obvious. A good mesh surface has uniform color, square and consistent mesh holes, and the life and screening efficiency of the mesh must be good; on the contrary, the mesh surface color is uneven, the mesh number is unstable, and there are large and small holes. The life and screening efficiency of the mesh are also greatly affected.

Secondly, in addition to the influence of raw materials, the net weight of the mesh is also one of the important factors affecting the stainless steel square hole mesh, especially for heavy-duty woven meshes of 1 mesh to 10 mesh. The mesh will definitely be lost during the weaving process. Different weaving machines and weaving technicians adjust the equipment in different ways, resulting in different extensions of the warp wires, resulting in different wire diameters after weaving, and different net weights.

Excessive extension of the warp wire leads to thinner warp wire diameters, lighter net weights, and poor wear resistance, which damages the service life of the woven mesh.

Finally, the weaving machine and accessories, weaving technicians, and quality inspection work will also affect the quality stratification of the metal woven mesh.

The fully CNC weaving machine can ensure accurate mesh count, more uniform mesh holes, and smooth mesh surface; ordinary weaving machines may have mesh offset and mesh surface fluctuations.

The imported steel reed weaving dense mesh (stainless steel square hole mesh above 300 mesh) has uniform mesh holes; ordinary steel reed weaving stainless steel dense mesh is prone to downtime repair and defects such as large and small holes.

The adjustment of the equipment by the weaving technicians and the inspection process of the quality inspection staff directly affect the quality level of the metal woven mesh, such as whether the stainless steel can be flat in its natural state, without curling or warping, the overall structure of the stainless steel mesh is stable, and the mesh surface defect detection and repair, etc.
